Extreme heat wave temperatures expected by 2100, experts say

Hot future shock: Heat wave temperatures to soar

WASHINGTON - During the European heat wave of 2003 that killed tens of thousands, the temperature in parts of France hit 104 degrees. Nearly 15,000 people died in that country alone. During the Chicago heat wave of 1995, the mercury spiked at 106 and about 600 people died.

In a few decades, people will look back at those heat waves "and we will laugh," said Andreas Sterl, author of a new study. "We will find (those temperatures) lovely and cool."

Sterl's computer model shows that by the end of the century, high temperatures for once-in-a-generation heat waves will rise twice as fast as everyday average temperatures. Chicago, for example, would reach 115 degrees in such an event by 2100. Paris heat waves could near 109 with Lyon coming closer to 114.

Sterl, who is with the Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute, projects temperatures for rare heat waves around the world in a study soon to be published in the journal Geophysical Research Letters.

His numbers are blistering because of the drying-out effect of a warming world. Most global warming research focuses on average daily temperatures instead of these extremes, which cause greater damage.

His study projects a peak of 117 for Los Angeles and 110 for Atlanta by 2100; that's 5 degrees higher than the current records for those cities. Kansas City faces the prospect of a 116-degree heat wave, with its current all-time high at 109, according to the National Climactic Data Center.

A few cities, such as Phoenix, which once hit 122 degrees and is projected to have heat waves of 120, have already reached these extreme temperatures once or twice. But they would be hitting those numbers a little more often as the world heats up over time. For New York, it would only be a slight jump from the all-time record of 104 at John F. Kennedy Airport to the projected 106.

It could be worse. Delhi, India is expected to hit 120 degrees; Belem, Brazil, 121, and Baghdad, 122.

Those figures make sense, Ken Kunkel, a top Midwestern climate scientist and interim director of the Illinois Water Survey.

These are temperatures that are dangerous, said University of Wisconsin environmental health professor Dr. Jonathan Patz.

"Extreme temperature puts a huge demand on the body, especially anyone with heart problems," Patz said. "The elderly are the most vulnerable because they don't sense temperature as well."

And it's not just at the end of the century. By 2050, heat waves will be 3 to 5 degrees hotter than now "and probably be longer-lasting," Sterl said.

By mid-century, southern France's extreme heat waves should be around 111 degrees and then near 118 by the end of the century, Sterl's climate models predict. In the 1990s, that region's extreme heat wave peaked at 104 degrees; in the 1950s, the worst heat wave peaked around 91 degrees, according to Sterl."

  • The pure science is that the planet's temperature has risen 0.7 degrees in the last century, an increase that is well within natural variability. There is no actual indication of a continuation of the warming and the figures of extremes of warm and cold show that there is NO global phenomena except change!
The fact is that record low temperatures have been recorded in various parts of the world, the tropospheric temperatures have been falling steadily since the peak of global temperature in 1998, and all the figures are being revised right now as Mars is shown clearly to be experiencing 'climate changes' which (like the Earth's changes) can only be caused by the Sun (or do the Martians have SUVs and power stations? D'uh!).
The facts about undersea volcanoes warming the oceans, including the vast volcanic activity under the Arctic, should be enough for anyone with half-a-brain!

The scaremongering by computer-model junk science serves no one but the elite and their hunger for profit and control!
    • The level of denial on this issue is appalling...

      • With hundreds of well-qualified scientists against the 52 in the IPCC, on this issue, it is clear that there are still plenty of brainwashed people who continue to believe the scam of so-called 'global warming'.

What an appauling load of nonsense!
"should be around 111 degrees"? - this is criminal rubbish based on corrupt computer models and is NOT supported by the majority of properly qualified scientists on the planet!

Anyone who claims that science is fully behind the 'global warming' scam is either a liar and manipulator or doesn't know what they are talking about!
        • Not really denial, just a lack of faith in computer models. I think this is one scenario, but we have many variables. We have many who believe that there will by a collapse in the ice sheet in Greenland which will trigger an Ice Age. Earth ecosystems and climate has always been more complex than our primitive technology can predict. The sad thing is that the knee jerk reactions are dominated by big billion hording pigs like T Boone Pickens who wants to destroy countless habitats with wind farms, industrial solar, natural gas plants, coal and nuclear plants all in the name of climate change which is just a front for hording all the wealth. There are ways to use clean energy without all the environmental genocide that Pickens and weak minded supporters are advocating. New technology makes locally produced roof top solar efficient and far more environmentally friendly than the cooperate climate Gestapo. It's time to deal with this issue in a way that has a small environmental foot print. Don't let the cooperate assholes take the green out of green energy. Wind farms kill birds and bats. Big solar farms scrape up thousands of acres of habitat, use too much water, and destroy carbon storing ecosystems. People like Pickens will always make climate change worse.

          • Agreed Neotoma. I believe in global warming, but it is just one out of several warming episodes that have happened in the last several thousand years that have been recorded. There was the Medieval Warming phase, when Norse could settle Greenland and wine grapes were grown well north into England. In the Sierra Nevada of California, epic droughts and extreme forest fire events were recorded in giant sequoia tree rings. Then there was the Xerothermic phase of 6,000 to 4,000 years ago, another global warming period that nobody seems to want to talk about. In California, several desert plants moved northward (and have since been left as isolated pockets as global climate cooled again). This may have caused desertification in the Sahara Desert (which never recovered).

Then there was the last Interglacial about 127,000 years ago, the Eemian in Europe, or Sangamonian in the US, where all indications are that he global climate was warmer than today, and part of the Low Countries of Europe were flooded by 20 feet-higher sea levels. Hippos dwelled in Britain. But the world survived, and like Psi says, global climate change is not linear but cyclical, and things got cold again as the last Ice Age cut that global warming short.

The press and many scientists never talk about these past climate changes. The Earth has always been changing, and life always thrives. I am more worried about toxins in the environment, capitalist resource plundering, human overpopulation, and biodiversity from habitat destruction.
